  • This course will focus on Empowerment Approaches to Assessing and Addressing IPV.

  • This 2 hour CE course meets the Domestic Violence Requirement for licensure for the Board of LCSW, MFT & MHC.

Empowerment Approaches to Assessing & Addressing Interpersonal Violence

The purpose of this course is to educate mental health professionals on the definition and prevalence of interpersonal violence (IPV). The training focuses on empowering both victims and perpetrators to end the cycle of abuse. Topics covered include identifying personal biases, barriers to care, assessment, treatment, safety planning, and resources available.

Learning objectives:

  • Define interpersonal violence
  • Describe the prevalence of interpersonal violence
  • Identify personal biases that may impede treatment
  • Describe the prevalence of interpersonal violence in the United States
  • Understand the cycle of abuse
  • Identify groups at high risk for interpersonal violence
  • Describe common characteristics of both victims and perpetrators of interpersonal violence
  • Identify warning signs and those at an increased risk of homicide in violent relationships
  • Demonstrate increased understanding of PTSD and impact on cycle of abuse
  • Identify the role of the health care professional in reporting interpersonal violence and assisting victims when minors are involved
  • Identify special populations that are at increased risk for experiencing interpersonal violence
  • Demonstrate increased knowledge about safety planning
  • Comprehensive understanding of resources available to both perpetrators and victims of interpersonal violence
